DL Phenylalanine, also known as DLPA, contains different forms of the essential amino acid Phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, which means the body can only get it from external sources such as supplements or foods. Phenylalanine comes in three forms, L-Phenylalanine, D-Phenylalanine, and DL Phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is a precursor for tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine, and melanin. The “L” form is a natural substance normally found in protein rich foods such as meat, nuts, and dairy. L-Phenylalanine is also thought to be helpful in supporting mood.
